How it started
At the time, I was in a long-distance relationship, separated by 7 time zones. We used to start our days with each other’s voices, but as life got busier—and the time difference harder—it became difficult. That’s when I began to imagine a way to bring that feeling back.
What Voiby does
Voiby is a service that lets you wake up to your partner’s voice. You record a message today, and it becomes their alarm tomorrow morning.
The app also shows your partner’s local time and whether they might be asleep. The background changes with sunrise and sunset in their city, so you always have a subtle reminder of where they are in the world.
A different way to set alarms
Instead of scrolling endlessly through hours and minutes, Voiby uses a grid, where X-axis is for minutes and Y-axis is for hours. You just swipe once through the grid to set the alarm. It’s quick, simple, and a little fun.
Lamps that connect
Alongside the app, I made a pair of bedside lamps with Arduino and 3D printing, with help from my friend Dajin who majored in industrial design. Users can hold to send a signal to the partner’s lamp, and when both lamps are on, they glow in sync—like sharing a small moment together, even from far away.
